Grading Scale

When reviewing fiction books, I grade them on five different characteristics: characters, plot, originality, writing, and recommendation. A book has a chance of getting 20 points out of 20 on each characteristic. All the points of the five characteristics are then added up to get whatever score out of 100. Below is the grading system I use to determine the decency of a book. ;-)

98-100 or A+ : I absolutely loved this book and may have had an affinity with it. I was touched in someway and I have a lasting impression of this book. I will most definitely read it again sometime in the future, and might even purchase it for my own. It might also have some serious potential of getting an extended review. ;-)

95-97 or A : This was a very good book. I was completely satisfied and enjoyed reading it. The writing was solid, the characters were strong and the plot developed smoothly. I will probably read this book again in the future.

90-94 or A- : This was a decent book that I liked. Overall I enjoyed it even though there might have been a few factors that didn't quit satisfy me. I have no regrets about reading it and might do so again in the future. This is a book I would probably find suited someone else better than myself.

80-89 or B : There were definitely parts of the book I didn't love. The writing was alright but didn't necessarily capture my attention. The plot seem a bit obvious without many dynamic surprises. I still liked this book but would probably not read it again.

70-79 or C : I did not particularly enjoy this book at all. It probably bored me and the writing was dull. The characters were probably unimaginative and unoriginal. The plot seemed to progress nowhere and was a tad predictable. I am not planning on reading this book soon or at all.

60-69 or D : Didn't like it. I finished the book, but had many doubts. I most likely will not recommend it book to anybody. I will never read it again. ;-)

59 or below or F : I couldn't finish it. It might have been terribly boring, very unbelievable, or something different. I would only read this book if I was forced or it was the last in the world. Even then it might be time to find a new hobby.

When reviewing fiction books I mostly give an A. I rarely give a B and have never graded anything lower. Either I'm too lenient of a book reviewer or all I have to read are good books. ;-)
